Many of our talented former Sixth Formers have been taking their first steps towards their chosen careers since leaving Colfe’s. The website caught up with two of our most recent graduates. Eighteen year olds Max White, and Florence Yilma, left Colfe’s Sixth Form in the summer after finishing their A levels.

Max has already started on the path to becoming a professional golfer, after winning the respected Kent ‘Order of Merit’. Max was awarded the prestigious title after scoring the highest number of points for his best six Kent Golf competitions, entered throughout the year. This makes Max the most successful golfer in the county for 2012. Max was presented with a trophy and the prize of a £300 Golf Trolley at an awards dinner at the end of August. He said it was a great honour “I was sat at the Champions table with many influential and successful golf professionals, including some England players. I was very pleased because the award is based on your best six games in the year and I was delighted to have done so well.”

Max, who currently plays off scratch, is taking a year out to further improve his game, and hopes to start a degree course next year. He said, “I am using this year to further improve my handicap and my game in general and then I hope to get onto a Golf Course in Birmingham. This is the only course in the world where you finish it, PGA qualified as a professional and also with a degree. However for every 500 applications there are only 24 places, so it is extremely competitive. I am currently playing for the Kent Colts, so hopefully I can take this year to work hard and enjoy my golf.”

Max is playing in the Kent Winter Trials which start in Deal this Sunday.

Talented musician and singer, Florence Yilma, who also graduated from Colfe’s in the summer, has already had the opportunity to sing at the prominent jazz club Ronnie Scott’s. Flo started her BMus degree in Jazz vocals at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama this September, and performed at Ronnie’s during a late night Jam Session with other musicians. She said, “I have a really good friend who often plays Bass at the club and it led to me asking if I could sing at one of the open jam Sessions. This is an opportunity for musicians to get up and perform and was a really great experience. I really valued being able to put myself forward and perform. I sang a Ballad called Stardust, which went down really well and I had a number of very positive comments afterwards.

“I’m really enjoying life at the Guildhall, but it is quite difficult as there is so much to learn; even just getting used to the new timetable has been challenging! Performing at places like Ronnie Scott’s though, and getting out there and networking, is really why I stayed in London and it’s definitely living up to my expectations so far.”

Head of Sixth Form Mr Drury said, “Our Sixth Form is full of talented, hardworking and committed students who then go on to make a positive contribution in the outside world. Max and Flo are two good examples of that and it’s wonderful to know our former pupils are going on to do so well.”
